How Was Your Day?

Postby persey » Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:07 pm

Another thread from the old forum.

How was my day? It was a busy day at work. Lot's of new stock arriving today. Plus I had a project that had to be done today.
Then when I get home from work, what do I find in my mail box...A summons for Jury Duty, for next month..the 25th! That's not something I'm looking forward to!!!

I've had to go to jury duty a couple of times and it really sucks. the only good thing is that I live in Denton County which means I have to go to Denton Tx instead of Downtown Dallas. That does make it easier to deal with since I'm not having to fight all that traffic and few parking spaces at the Dallas County Courthouse in Downtown Dallas.
There's no need to fear!!!! Underdog is here!!!!

I live in Jefferson county in the city of Lakewood, but I have to go to Denver. I hate driving in Denver and trying to find a parking space. I have to check-in on the 24th to find out if I have to report or not. I can either call or go to the web-site to find out. :(

I'm lucky, no jury duty for me :D ever :D Deaf people get exemptions since the lawyers worry we won't hear them pontificate :D

JURY DUTY

I once did jury duty, 10 full days, in Compton, CA

This was several years ago and the murder and mayhem kept the pace in the local court house fast. But each time I got into the jury box (where the judge and/or the attorneys question you to detect bias and if detected they kick you back into the pool) I got kicked out. Being white male in my 30's I wasn't surprised the first time, but then I started to resent the next three times.

They were assuming because of my profile I wouldn't be suitable in a jury trial with a Black defendant.

So I decided when I got into the jury box again I would tell the truth when they asked me questions.

The next case was a young Black teenager who allegedly was seen by a cop (also Black) selling drugs on a street corner, and when the cop approached he dropped the drugs on the ground and claimed he had nothing to do with them. The cop says he saw him drop them. That's basically what they told us before asking questions. A final detail is that supporting the defendant in the audience were four of his friends all of whom were staring / glowering at the people in the jury box.

I got in the jury box and the very first question was:

Is there anyone among you who thinks that the defendant might be guilty?

I raised my hand

Judge: Yes?

Me: Your Honor. I think he might be guilty.

He decided right away that I needed to be put down for this effrontery to American jurisprudence

Judge: Are you aware that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty?

Me: I agree he is innocent until proven guilty, but that wasn't the question. We were asked if we thought he might be guilty, and I think he might be guilty. (Actually the truth was that having sized up the cop, the kid, the four friends, I decided it very likely he was guilty, but I decided to back off from my original resolve to tell all of the truth - in part because the Judge was looking seriously pissed.)

I got lectured for a few minutes harshly about how all defendants are innocent until proven guilty and then sent back to the jury room.

One final wrinkle. The next and last case I was sent on was for a 16 year old White kid who knifed his mother until dead, oops, allegedly knifed his mother until dead. Probably the only White kid in Compton at the time.

This time I barely could get out. The Judge did not want to let me go.
Ellen is the one irreplaceable factor. The DLM story arcs could be restructured around the loss, permanent or temporary, of any of the other characters including Mandy as Rube, but not Ellen as George.

This day has just started for me, so I'll talk about my yesterday instead. Yesterday I messed up by frying the pork for lunch that my parents were having for the pea soup for dinner this evening. My dad had told me what it was for... while I was playing Destroy All Humans 2, so it really didn't get stuck in my head. Not the end of the world, of course, we went to buy some new pork.

I got Tropic Thunder - Director's Cut in the mail, which I had pre-ordered. They also added a disc with an episode of some Italian tv series. Nice bonus. :) At the evening I was gonna watch the first episode of the new Knight Rider, but I discovered that the season premiere of Heroes was at the same time, so I watched that instead. I also found out that Comedy Central (we got it in Sweden a few weeks ago) are showing DLM. Wonder if it means they'll show the movie too?

Last night I went to a stand up comedy show that was hosted by my old teacher from the writing class, who now has a stand up class and his students were performing. One of them is a chick I knew from high school, she went one class before me. She was awesome, and so were most of the other ones. The two last ones were professional comedians, and I recognized at least one of them from TV. Sadly, there were some chattery people at a table at front row who got more and more talky, so they distracted the comics a bit. Luckily, the professionals knew how to handle them and they pretty much verbally lynched by the entire audience.

Then I missed my bus home, so I hung out at my friend's apartment, where he and another friend where preparing for their own night out. I walked out together with them and caught the next bus. I got home past midnight, but wasn't really tired, so I watched some TV while inhaling some soda. I hadn't had much to drink the whole evening, so I was thirsty like hell!

My day so far is good. I've been watching the DLM movie. I'm taking a break right now. Later today, I'm going to Corral West to buy a new pair of boots. My old boots are falling apart and I don't want to wear my good boots to work.

Pretty much the same here, save for the church part. Things are okay, except I fell asleep a bit late last night.

Work was quiet as usual. The night before, I found a billfold that belonged to a lady that lived in the apartment complex I patrol nightly. It found it and three pieces of mail, one piece containing her W-2 form. Since it was about 1:00-1:30AM when I found 'em, I waited until tonight to stop by her apartment to give them back to her. Needless to say, she was very happy to get them back.

BTW, I'm 38-years-old and have yet to serve jury duty. I almost did a few months ago, though, but I had just moved into Pierce County and the summons was for Kitsap County. So, after I updated my voter registration and my driver license, I received a letter from the County Auditor informing me I was dismissed from jury duty. Dodged a bullet, didn't I.
Hey, I only jump on the bandwagon when everyone's doing it.

Today is okay so far. Now yesterday didn't go as planned. I was watching the DLM movie and it stopped after 72 minutes and said wait 54 minutes then watch the rest. Or join the sight. Well I couldn't see paying $10.00 to watch the end of the movie. So I'll wait until the 17th.

Then I go to the boot store only to find an empty building, so all in all, it could have been a better day. I'll have to find a different store today! :(

Today I felt worse, so I left work early and went home and took nap. Then made an appointment with the doctor, I got a prescription for some cough medicine to sleep at night and he told me to take some musinex for the congestion. And that this is caused by a virus and it lasts two weeks. He said it is really going round. I heard it can turn into pneumonia. I had a shot a few weeks ago for pneumonia. It must be something new.I hadn't heard of it before.

I can't use Microsoft Word on my laptop! :x I had a trial version of Microsoft Office downloaded for a limited time and apparantly it has expired. I tried getting another trial version yesterday and installed it this morning. Then I tried using Word, but the damn thing still doesn't work! How am I gonna fix it? I really need the program for my writing and school work.

Legally buy the full version. Do they sell student versions over there?

You can try open office. I have never used but it is free.

Funny you should say that. I started a thread about it at a different forum and some advised me to get OpenOffice, which there was an icon to on my desktop and everything. Got it downloaded and installed, hopefully it'll work. Although, there's a debate on the thread I started about whether OO is pretty good or the worst piece of garbage there is, so I do wonder how I'll like it.

On another note, a DVD movie I ordered online on December last year finally arrived today. It was out of stock where I made the order, so it took them some time to get it back. At least I have it now, yay.

Hokie, you might try doing a system restore. That resets the computer back to the original setting as to when you purchased the computer. It will be like you just bought the computer. I had to do that recently. I ad to reinstall the guide for media player and my printer.

Not too good, I'm afraid. I came down with a cold this weekend and I was hoping I'd get better today, so I wouldn't have to miss scool today. I've spent most of my day in bed and whenever I've gotten up it's felt like walking on the moon. And my sense of taste is completely messed up, because everything that I've had to drink or eat has tasted really weird.
